Shimanek Covered Bridge
Shimanek Covered Bridge covers Thomas Creek in Linn County. There have been five bridges at this location. The current bridge was built in 1966 and went through an extensive rehabilitation in 2022.
There are three reamining bridges on Thomas Creek; Hannah, Shimanek, and Gilkey. The Thomas Creek area is quite picturesque. The backdrop foliage of the three bridges dances with each season.

Shimanek Covered Bridge Rehabilitation Video
The lead engineer, Kevin Groom, captured video of the Shimanek Covered Bridge rehabilitation process. The work included: new lower chords, full length, and both sides of the 130'-6" Howe Truss, new substructure, new approach spans (prestressed concrete), new siding, new roof system, new deck, and new rails. Groom’s series of videos are posted on YouTube and provide insight to how these bridges were built.
Photography Tips
Shimanek is one of several red bridges. My photography skills are challenged by red bridges and bright daylight. I would suggest visiting the area in the early morning light or late afternoon. It is also helpful to go with a friend to alert you of oncoming traffic.
